      Snappy loves this. One year later with no maintenance, its crystal clear. When an ecosystem is set up correctly, it just works. Our builds just like this are outdoors and require no work too maintain tge water quality. Thanks for watching.

    I’ve never had one but love them. Hubby found one when he was a cop…knew a resident might for snapper soup. Got the snapper to clamp down in his Billy club and released it in a canal…it was huge and very heavy. Need these guys around as they are very important to our ecosystems. Snappy is a handsome devil! Btw they are very smart critters! Before I became severely disabled I had a beautiful painted turtle and had planned to get a mud turtle. Hubby found him a wonderful home and well, best laid plans. If didn’t guess from my name, I’m female, lol.

    • @crunchinfo
      @crunchinfo 20 дней назад

      I really dont believe any water outside of my control to be clean. I also have been to fish farms where feeder fish are propagated and would say that is also a choice with risk. Most of those fish are raised on comercialy processed food made with additives of unknown origins and contents. I always put the live fish on a clean out tank and maintain them for a few days, for whatever that is worth. I really dont like offering live food th at hasn't first been frozen and dont for all others at the refuge. Freezing first helps to eliminate parasites and fungas. This turtle insists on live. Thanks so much for watching!

    Hi How do you keep your water so clean and so red ish Brown?

    • @crunchinfo
      @crunchinfo 23 дня назад

      I use a biological approach building my filtration systems over mechanical. I have shown how to build a simple, cheap and large system in a video ill share. The reddish look is actually a brown that the camera tends to make look red. Its Tannins in the water. Tannin in the water I consider crucial during certain times of the year. Be sure to go through my channel and watch the building a filter cheap video and some if the videos about Tannins. Thanks for watching!

    • @crunchinfo
      @crunchinfo Месяц назад

      Yea, very oddly small. They are definatley 40 years old, cronicaled in photos and with the original paperwork. I believe it is due to living in a cold inviroment with no suplimental heat. They had a very short feeding seaso. They are in really good shape. They are "thick", not fat but thick in measurment from plastron to top of carapace. I have some 28 year olds we have had since hatchlings that are 5 inched longer in carapace then these two. Thanks for watching!

    Sir, how big is Connie now? and I was wondering what is your frequencies of feeding these turtles? hatchlings vs juveniles vs adults? thanks!

    • @crunchinfo
      @crunchinfo 2 месяца назад

      Connie is 12 inch carapace, I haven't weighed her yet this season. I feed anything over 8 inches every week, somtimes a little more often in temperatures 80° and up. Anything over 100 lbs every week for the first month and eventually every week and a half to two weeks. I feed all until they are full though. Thanks for watching!

    • @groy4789
      @groy4789 2 месяца назад

      @@crunchinfo thank you sir! What about hatchlings? Do you feed them everyday or once a week just like those juveniles?

    • @crunchinfo
      @crunchinfo 2 месяца назад

      @@groy4789 Hatchlings we treat differently. We feed them smaller amounts, not nessasirly fed until full, every three days for the first year, then we start giving them larger meals and maintain 3-4 day intervals. When they are 6-8 inch we move to once a week. All of that is at 78°-82° water temps. Hatchlings will over eat. In the wild they typically dont have food arrive at their mouth every day or even constantly like I see some doing.
